Aren’t we marching into Spring?
Alice walker in Color purple wrote: ‘I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.’
Although the sentiments still rings true today, our notion of what springtime is being drastically altered by this blustery, finger-biting cold in March. It looks like gone are the days of beautiful flowers and plants springing up and buds blossoming in early March- a symbol of Spring. A time when, the fresh green spring will emerge from the cold earth, and beautify our cold grey and wet looking- side of the world.
Yesterday I was deceived by the sun, yet again! I think it was the eagerness for the arrival of Spring; so much that I was ill-dressed for the weather. I walked the town of Manchester clinging and wearing a ashamed face on me. Prepared for that look on a stranger’s face that tells you ‘tut tut tut.’ Maybe strangers don’t really say it and I just assume they laugh at me when I’m not dressed for the weather. Or are you one of those people like me who firmly make their teeth chatter when they are cold and make the BRRRRRR noise in an odd way?
I intended to go for a walk to notice the blossoming of beautiful flowers, so I don’t piss God off; pluck some roses for my hair and hopefully have an impromptu picnic. I was glad to see that I was not alone when I saw strangers shielding from the wind just like me. I wanted to walk under panoplies of leaves dappled by the sunlight, and through billowing meadows alive with flowers and the serene buzz of bees.
I’ve learnt that life has no truck with my feelings and I find it very upsetting that it doesn’t. Since I can’t get some warmth, I’ll just pick up the book I’m reading for the month- Bitter leaf by Chioma Okereke.
Wait till I tell you all about it.
For now, I’ll just put my scarf, gloves and boots back on, BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
